Here, we enter the realm and myth of the ifrit, a creature of pre-Islamic Arabian mythology and Islamic cosmology. We find the lineage of the ifrit as a jinn of some description, marked by its association with disobedience, anger, and immense power. In our case, we highlight the dual nature of the ifrit and lay down that while normally depicted evil, the creature has freedom of will and may either be good or bad. We proceed to outline the contribution of the ifrit to of the religious traditions. Observing the rich canvas of myth and legend surrounding this fierce monster. Lastly, we reflect on the ifrit as a symbol of humanity’s greatest fear of unadulterated power and what our desires cost us, a strange shadow of things unseen that enters our lives.
