This week’s episode looks at the haunting tale of the Hammersmith Ghost. A ghostly appearance that sent horror and superstition through the early 19th-century London neighborhood. The story unfolds against the backdrop of the fatal incident of January 3, 1804, when Francis Smith, in his belief that he had a ghostly encounter, made a mistake and shot a bricklayer, Thomas Millwood, dead who was just dressed in white work clothes. This event arises out of some exceedingly grave matters of belief, fear, and what comes from misplaced identity in the supernatural realm. In looking at the following trial, we reflect upon how the court struggled with attempting to reconcile superstition and justice, finding Smith guilty of murder as well as presenting the duality of human vision and public fear. The legacy of this tale survives, as a warning against the means by which religion can overshadow deeds and lead to disastrous consequences, to haunt English law and folklore together.
