A dead body that does not walk but hops, that is rigidly and uprightly positioned, moving within boundaries of movement that do not conform to human form. In this episode we discuss the Jiangshi. Referred to often as a “hopping” vampire (or Jiangshi) and the eerie boundary where myth, and reality overlap. While there are many peculiarities among the many historical practices of moving corpses (around China), and the vast multiplicity of other forms of spiritual belief, there is more to the Jiangshi than mere folklore. The Jiangshi has no specific boundary; it exists somewhere between fact and fiction, and in that liminality, as the distinctions of culture, fear, and the unknown begin to break down, so does our understanding of dead people not remaining motionless.
